OneDrive for company comes to OS X and is integrated into the same app for iOS for OneDrive

Microsoft has not only been presenting news in the last seven days with Windows 10 Project HoloLens, etc but throwing two major improvements for users of Apple and its system of cloud storage. OneDrive for the company comes to OS X and iOS app already enables integration between personal and business account.

So far we required two independent iOS applications, it is no longer necessary and from the same application will have access to everything. AppleCare plan new features

Tara Bunch, Vice president of the AppleCare and technical support division in Cupertino, recently held a meeting with employees to discuss the service. And at that meeting, as reported by 9to5Mac sources, there have been some performance figures from AppleCare and their future plans.

Apparently, the AppleCare + service that protects the iOS devices from accidental damage goes well. Over 30 million people have contracted in the 14 countries where it is active, which has generated $2,000 billion in revenues and motivation to expand the service to more markets. One of the measures that can be taken in the future, for example, extend the deadline to purchase AppleCare + 30 to 60 days after purchase of the iOS device. 

Depending on how the economy goes, we might get to see a AppleCare + for Macs

We may also get to see a AppleCare + for Macs, now that bestsellers are Macbooks and are also subject to random breakdowns. Everything depends on the economy as something for the Mac would be significantly more expensive than iOS Terminal.

Another interesting thing is the improvements to our Apple accounts in relation to technical assistance. Taking advantage of the unification of Apple Retail and Apple Store web of Angela Ahrendts, Tara commented on a more unified experience between the Genius Bar, phone support and online.

Yosemite allows to do scripts for Automator with Javascript

With the passage of time since the WWDC we continue to discover those little details that were not mentioned in the various presentations. What is more surprising us is Yosemite, OSX version for Macs is revealing news that makes more and more interesting. The latest discovery, is the possibility of using Javascript in Automator. 

Until now to make small programs that help us in our task in OS X, we had to use Applescript in combination with Automator. From now on, we can use language as known to many as Javascript to make any script you want. There will be no need to use Applescript in no time. 

For those interested in scripting and really know how it will work this new feature in OS X only have to visit the WWDC videos and check out the video dedicated to Javascript and Automator.

Although of course there are opinions for everything, Keynote WWDC 2014 has been anything but lacking in substance: iOS 8, OS X Yosemite, iCloud Drive, Health, HomeKit... A flurry of news it will take to assimilate to its launch general public this fall but which at least we have taken a good step.

What is "Continuity"?

In the mission to further integrate iOS with OS X, Apple has just introduced a new system for sharing applications between iOS and OS X called Continuity at WWDC 2014. With this new system we can share what we are doing to our iOS device and transfer it to your Mac and also vice versa.

Continuity is Apple's way of calling the entire system that has been devised to share the most of our iOS devices with our Mac with OS X Yosemite. Handoff is the system that allows us to share any application on your iPhone and vice versa, for example, if you are writing an email on our iPhone, the Mac will detect it and can finish writing therefrom. The system will also work with Safari, presentations, and any application that offers support for Handoff. Also allow us to have instant Hotspot meter without any password. 

Additionally it also introduced integration of SMS and calls with OS X. If we set our iOS device, our SMS will see in iMessage as if it were a normal message. Likewise this compatibility extends to calls, allowing us to use our Mac as a handsfree for our iPhone. This utility also allows you to call people from our Mac to our contact list and call phones we find on the web via Safari, all calls going through our iPhone.

Apple introduces OS X 10.10 Yosemite

Apple introduced yesterday at the WWDC 2014 which is the 10.10 version of OS X. As previously rumored Mavericks successor will be named Yosemite and bring with it a new design, new features and applications completely renovated.

The main novelty of OS X Yosemite is its new graphical section. All exterior appearance of the operating system has been redesigned, giving it a flatter, similar to what we are used to in the current iOS look. The Dock loses its three-dimensional perspective and most system applications have gained new icons, from the Finder, Launchpad or Trash. Finder windows have also received a redesign, winning as the main color white, becoming translucent top bar like the Finder and eliminating the effect of aqua maximize and minimize buttons.

Notification Center is also updated to look more like iOS, getting a tab of "Today" in which we see from our calendar to appointments or time will do. Spotlight is another feature that are restarted in OS X Yosemite; now the search dialog will appear in the middle of the screen to be able to search anything. Files, applications and contacts are the top searches but also can search in the Internet any term eliminating the middleman and showing itself in the Spotlight search results. 

OS X Yosemite will be available free in the fall and during the summer all users have access to the beta without being a developer. Then simply apply through the Apple website.

Notifyr allows us to see iOS notifications on your Mac

Pocket for Mac

Sort the items you see, bookmark favorites and save it for future reference is very necessary for many of us. The amount of information out there on the Internet uphill sort and separate the good from the best. Pocket version for Mac makes this work very easy and can also read the posts downloaded without internet connection.

Final Cut Pro X and Proxy editing files

Edit HD video is not limited to the last Mac with powerful processors and lots of RAM. Do it on older computers is possible. We just need to know how to harness its power and how to work more optimally. 

Any starting with video editing should know what video formats are the best to work with the selected application. In OS X, despite the criticism, one of the best options is Final Cut Pro X. The Apple's professional video editor allows us to make all kinds of issues and its price makes it one of the most attractive solutions.

When FCPX was presented watched how the number of video formats expanded. It was possible to edit AVCHD files imported from different cameras without resorting to converters. Of course is still more advisable to transcode ProRes since editing is more efficient. The "only" problem of working in ProRes is that the file size increases. A video 200MB happens to occupy 1GB approximately.


There are computers that can not handle this task, to solve it we have the option to edit using proxy files. A proxy file is a copy of our original material that the system creates and you will have a lower resolution than the original. Exactly 1/4 of the clip resolution. This helps the computer manage a lighter gross, so editing is facilitated file.

One example. Edit 4K on a MacBook Air is an impossible task. If we work with proxy files will conduct an issue with 1080p files, something the Mac can move with greater ease. Then once finished editing, when export is done using the files at full resolution. The proxy only serve as a reference and to facilitate editing. 

Editing in mobility

As you see, make use of the Proxy editing in FCPX not only allow us to do with our less powerful computers or even as a way to stretch the life of our Mac. Also provides us the ability to edit in mobility. That is, we can work on our Mac Pro or iMac with the original files and high resolution, but if we need to start while we are traveling, or want to continue at home on laptop we can too.

So we go to use the Proxy Edition. According to MacBreak explained how the idea is to create a library in FCPX where the original files are referenced and it just kept proxy material. Thus, we can take our laptop to the library, make any necessary edits and then copy back to our main Mac project. But I leave you with the video where the workflow you will see more clearly.

Image Capture, perhaps the most underestimated OS X application

Many users do not know it, but OS X hides small applications that can meet many more functions than we think. Already demonstrated with TextEdit, which can replace Word or Pages for users who do not require a processor too complicated texts. Today, following the experienced with my students in classes that give training in Valencia, I will defend another application unjustly ignored: Image Capture. 

First, avoid confusion: I'm not talking action or capture screen in OS X or the Grab application: I speak of the Image Capture application that hides within the Other folder Launchpad. And never fails: whenever I reveal its capabilities to anyone, it is shocked.

Image Capture serves two major functions, so let's see them one by one. 


Import and manage images from external devices

What opens when you connect a camera to the Mac? iPhoto to import the photos to our photo library. What if we do not use iPhoto? In that case we can do transferring raw files with the Finder, or we can use Image Capture.

The application is able to recognize digital cameras and memory cards, showing a list or a mosaic all the images and giving us the option to import or delete the device comfortably. It also works with video, so we will not be reviewing any content.

A key feature of this is that Image Capture also recognizes iOS devices, making it a very useful program when we remove our entire photo roll for cleaning, importing all or part of your computer without complications and releasing space in our iCloud backups.

In this part, Image Capture is what clears me all doubts about these discs or USB flash drives with programs and utilities that bring compact cameras: no more install all that crap of applications will not use rarely and only take up space our Launchpad: OS X has everything you need for basic operations importing photos.

Scan images and documents

The other role played perfectly Image Capture is the scanning of documents. Here one can also say the same thing with importing pictures: we can completely dispense with all the host of utilities that usually come included with multifunction printers which always say "should" be installed to take advantage of all the capabilities of the scanner and / or printer. 


Nothing could be further from the truth: 99% of users just want to scan documents without complications, and Image Capture is able to do that without installing any add-on. Start the program and our scanner appear on the right sidebar of devices.
